Battlefield Tour Wolfheze and Oosterbeek
Actions of the 4th Parachute Brigade and other units

On Saturday, April 5th, the Friends held a battlefield tour with the subject of actions of the 4th Parachute Brigade and other units between Wolfheze and Oosterbeek.

This battlefield walk was organised and was led by the Friends British representative, Niall Cherry. He was assisted by some other guides from the Netherlands and England. The walk began in Wolfheze with the advance of the 1st Airborne Reconnaissance Squadron and the actions of the SS-Panzer-Grenadier-Ersatz-und Ausbildungs Bataillion 16 under the command of Hauptsturmführer (Major) Krafft. The deployment of the 4th Parachute Squadron Royal Engineers was also discussed.

Then the walk was along the Johannahoeveweg to the area of Papendal. Here the participants were given an explanation about the landing of the Polish gliders on LZ L. Several years ago foxholes and trenches were restored where it is stated the headquarters of the 4th Parachute Brigade were. Evidence was presented that this was where the 4th Parachute Squadron RE was and another location east of here was visited where trenches are also still visible. This created some lively debate but the evidence from 1944 in war diaries and reports backs this up. Before and after lunch at  the restaurant Leeren Doedel an explanation of the action of the 10th Battalion in this area was given, before moving to the Dreijenseweg area where the actions of the 156 Parachute Battalion and glider pilots were examined. The final locations visited were in Oosterbeek and looked at the 4th Parachute Squadron RE around the Ommershof house and the 156 Parachute Battalion near the Paul Kruger Street. This interesting and simulating tour ended at 16.00 with most people having a welcome drink in the restaurant Schoonoord.

13 UK friends came to the Netherlands for this tour and around 35 Dutch friends attended. It is nice to report that there were more applications than there was room and so in future get your application in early! A tour guide was given out together with various other maps and reports by the speakers.
